This is our 6th year running the Scéim Aitheantais Scoileanna Gaeltachta, and we continue to add more subjects each year. All of our students currently in the Scéim report that their spoken Gaeilge has improved from maith go an-mhaith, and their written Gaeilge from réasúnta go maith.
First year students who avail of these classes are the only 1st year group offered a trip to the Gaeltacht, and attend various workshops delivered entirely through Irish — this year including cartoon, drumming and cookery workshops.
Students benefit from greater student–teacher contact time, with more opportunities to ask questions and deepen understanding in a smaller, more focused class group.
The oral component accounts for 40% of the Leaving Certificate Irish examination. Regular immersion in classroom Irish dramatically builds confidence and fluency.
Candidates in the Scéim are awarded bonus marks in their Junior Certificate examination — a meaningful academic advantage earned through participation.
Research shows that students who study through a second language also develop stronger ability in other languages, including English, through improved metalinguistic awareness.
Each Scéim class benefits from a dedicated language assistant in the room, providing additional support to ensure every student can access the content confidently.
Scéim students are offered an exclusive trip to the Gaeltacht — the only 1st year group with this privilege — plus the opportunity to apply for summer scholarships to Irish Colleges.
