Assessments

Assessments at CBC

A suite of standardised and school-based assessments used to understand how students think, learn and progress — from cognitive ability testing to reading comprehension, analytics and term examinations.

Assessment at Coláiste Bhaile Chláir goes beyond exams. We use a range of standardised tools alongside term assessments to build a complete picture of every student — understanding how they think, what support they need, and how to help them achieve their full potential.

CAT4 — Cognitive Abilities Test

Standardised Assessment · Cognitive Reasoning

CAT4

1st Year students sit their CAT4 tests in September of their first year

CAT4 is a standardised assessment developed to measure a student’s reasoning abilities, rather than what they have already been taught. It looks at how students think, reason, and solve problems, and is commonly used with students aged 6–17. CAT4 is not a curriculum test — it does not assess knowledge of English, Maths, or Science directly.

Understanding words and relationships between them. Skills linked to reading, writing, and language-based subjects.

Working with numbers, patterns, and relationships. Supports learning in mathematics and numeracy-based subjects.

Interpreting visual information and patterns. Relates to spatial thinking used in science, design, and technology.

Visualising shapes, rotations, and movement. Important for geometry, engineering, and problem-solving tasks.

Each battery includes two short timed tests, usually completed digitally.

Stanines (1–9)

Scores are given for each battery, creating a profile of strengths and relative weaknesses, rather than a single overall mark.

Uses of CAT4 for Students

  • Discover how they learn best
  • Recognise strengths in verbal, numerical, or visual thinking
  • Build confidence by separating ability from current attainment
  • Students with high potential who may need extra challenge
  • Students whose reasoning ability is stronger than their current grades suggest
  • Possible learning difficulties where attainment is lower than expected ability
  • Informed subject selection in middle and senior years
  • Discussions about pathways — academic, technical, or creative

Uses of CAT4 for Schools

CBC uses inline with Athena Analytics

  • Establish a baseline on entry or transition points
  • Predict likely future attainment when combined with progress data
  • Compare cognitive potential with actual achievement
  • Identify students needing early intervention
  • Plan differentiation in the classroom
  • Support students with SEND, EAL, or uneven achievement profiles
  • Evaluate student progress relative to potential
  • Demonstrate value added
  • Inform school improvement planning and self-evaluation
  • Adapt teaching strategies to suit different reasoning styles
  • Understand why a student may struggle despite effort
  • Plan enrichment or stretch opportunities

NGRT — New Group Reading Test

Standardised · Adaptive · Ages 6–16

NGRT

Completed online · ~30 minutes · whole class administration

NGRT (New Group Reading Test) is a standardised, adaptive reading assessment used with students typically aged 6–16. It measures key aspects of reading comprehension and sentence-level understanding, rather than decoding alone. The test is usually completed online, takes around 30 minutes, and can be administered to whole classes at once.

Adaptive Test Design

All students begin with similar questions. Difficulty automatically adjusts based on responses — strong readers are challenged, struggling readers are not overwhelmed.

Sentence Completion, Passage Comprehension, and vocabulary in context. Assesses reading comprehension, not just speed or decoding.

Uses of NGRT in Schools

  • Identify students below, at, or above expected reading levels
  • Highlight students whose comprehension is a barrier to learning
  • Spot reading difficulties early, including students who decode fluently but do not fully understand texts
  • Measure reading progress over time by repeating NGRT at set points
  • Evaluate the impact of reading interventions
  • Track cohort and class-level trends
  • Group students for guided or independent reading
  • Plan targeted literacy interventions
  • Support across-the-curriculum reading demands (e.g. in history or science)

SRA — Library

Graded Reading Programme · Independent Practice

SRA Library

Scholastic Reading Award — levelled fiction and non-fiction

The SRA (Scholastic Reading Award) Library is a graded independent reading programme containing fiction and non-fiction texts, colour-coded or levelled books, comprehension questions and activities, and self-checking or teacher-guided responses. It is designed to promote independent, confidence-building reading practice.

How SRA Supports Reading Development

Students read at their own level, building fluency and stamina.

Activities develop deep understanding, not just surface reading.

Levelled progression helps students experience success and build confidence.

Teachers can direct students to appropriate levels and monitor engagement.

NGRT + SRA Together — Best Practice

Use NGRT to accurately identify each student’s reading level and needs.

Use SRA to provide targeted, levelled reading practice matched to the student.

Repeat NGRT assessments to measure progress and evaluate the impact of SRA practice.

Make informed decisions about intervention, support, and challenge based on combined data.

Athena — Analytics

Athena Analytics

School data analysis and reporting platform — used inline with CAT4 at CBC

Athena Analytics is a school data analysis and reporting platform designed to bring together assessment, attainment, and progress data into clear, visual dashboards. It is widely used in schools to support evidence-based decision making, tracking progress and attainment over time, and identifying trends, gaps, and strengths at student, class, cohort, and whole-school level.

Using Athena to Analyse Assessment Data

  • Compare baseline data with current attainment
  • Track progress at pupil, class, and cohort level
  • Identify students making accelerated, expected, or limited progress
When CAT4 ability data is uploaded alongside attainment data (e.g. NGRT or subject assessments), Athena can highlight:
  • Students whose attainment is below cognitive potential
  • High-ability students who may not be sufficiently challenged
  • Students performing in line with or above expectations
